Snails and Their Habitats

Biodiversity and Survival Strategies

They are slow, really slow ... they are soft, they are slimy ...and greedy.
Most of us look at them with disgust. But snails and their relatives are fascinating, useful animals and true survivors.

Snails and slugs live on land, in freshwater and in the sea. They have been crawling across our planet for more than 500 million years.

The number of species is a matter of estimation. Biologists assume there are up to 100,000. In Germany, their number is limited with about 180 species. Nevertheless, surprisingly little is known about the mode of life of terrestrial snails although some species are very conspicuous.
