Neanderthal Man

History of Mankind

For 250,000 years the Neanderthal dominated Europe during the last glacial period until he died out about 30,000 years ago.

He is named after the site in the Neander Valley, in the present-day federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where a partial skeleton was found in 1856.

Neanderthal man was more inventive and adaptable than scientists had assumed for a long time.

Up to now we have been wondering: Who was our distant relative Homo sapiens neanderthalensis?
